Education:
Architects must hold a 5-year professional architect degree from an accredited university. Other types of professional degrees in architecture are available: a 2-year master’s degree for students with an undergraduate degree in architecture or a related area and a 3- or 4-year master’s degree for students with a degree in another discipline. Artistic and drawing ability is helpful but not required. Computer literacy is required, as most firms use computers for writing specifications, 2- and 3-dimensional drafting, and financial management. Knowledge of computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) is helpful and will become essential as architectural firms continue to adopt this technology. Students who master National CAD Standards will probably have an advantage in the job market.
Conditions:
Usually working in a comfortable environment, architects spend most of their time in offices consulting with clients, developing reports and drawings, and working with other architects and engineers. However, they often visit construction sites to review the progress of projects. Although most architects work approximately 40 hours per week, they often have to work nights and weekends to meet deadlines.
Outlook:
Employment of architects is expected to grow faster than the average through 2016. Many people are attracted by this occupation, and the number of applicants often exceeds the number of openings. Those who gain experience in the field, while in college, and who know CADD technology should have advantages in obtaining jobs.
License:
Applicant for license must hold a 5-year degree from an accredited college and three years training experience under the direct supervision of a licensed architect. Applicants contact the National Council of Architectural Registration Board (NCARB) for an intern information package. Qualified candidates may schedule individual parts of the exam at any time at a computerized testing center in their city. Reinstatement: $360; Annual Renewal: $135; Late Fee: $75; Examination Fees: $102-$170. Contact the Board for Registration of Architects, 770 Washington Avenue, Suite 150, Montgomery, AL 36130-4450 for additional information.
