SOC: 11-3021 Computer and Information Systems Managers


Plan, direct, or coordinate activities in such fields as electronic data processing, information systems, systems analysis, and computer programming.

Education:
A bachelor's degree is usually required. Some employers prefer to hire people with a master's degree, especially in business administration with a heavy emphasis on information technology. Some may only require an associate degree, but those people must have sufficient experience and be able to learn additional skills on the job. Need to have strong business skills. Should have experience with specific software and technology used on the job plus a background in either consulting or management.
Conditions:
They spend most of their time in an office setting. They work at least 40 hours a week and may have to work more to meet deadlines. May experience some pressure to meet technical goals in a short time period or within a tight budget. They are susceptible to eye strain, back discomfort, and hand wrist problems.
Outlook:
Employment of computer and information systems managers will increase faster than average through 2016. Rapid growth in employment can be attributed to the explosion in information technology and the expansion of the computer and data processing services industry. Employers will continue to hire managers who have the expertise to install sophisticated networks and keep them running smoothly.
