Career Exploration Guide Index
Education:
Industrial production managers often require a college degree in business administration, management, industrial technology, or industrial engineering. As production operations become more sophisticated, an increasing number of employers look for candidates with graduate degrees in industrial management or business administration. However, some employers prefer candidates with a business or engineering background; hiring well-rounded liberal arts graduates, with good interpersonal skills, willing to spend time in a production-related job. A number of companies hire college graduates as first-line supervisors and later promote them to management positions.
Conditions:
Industrial Production Managers spend time both on the production floor and in an office environment. They often work long hours and may be on call in companies that operate 24 hours a day. The job can be stressful having to deal with both production workers and upper management.
Outlook:
Even though manufacturing output is expected to rise, growing productivity among industrial production managers will limit growth in employment of these managers. Applicants with a college degree in industrial engineering, management, or business administration should have the best opportunities.
License:
License not required.
