Career Exploration Guide Index
Education:
Large construction firms are increasingly hiring individuals who combine industry work experience with a Bachelor's degree in construction, building science, or construction management. Graduates in related fields, such a engineering or architecture, are also entering the field. Persons interested need a solid background in building science, business, and management, as well as related work experience with the construction industry. Familiarity with computers and software programs is increasingly important.
Conditions:
Construction managers often work out of an office on a construction site or an office where a project is being monitored. Most work more than 40 hours per week, for they must be "on call" to deal with delays, bad weather, or emergencies at the site. They should be able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, coordinating several major activities at once.
Outlook:
Employment of construction managers is projected to increase as fast as average because the number of job openings arising from growth and replacement needs is expected to exceed the number of qualified managers seeking to enter the occupation. Prospects should be best for persons who have a bachelor's or higher degree in construction science, construction management, or construction engineering, as well as practical experience in the field.
License:
License not required.
