SOC: 13-1111 Management Analysts


Conduct organizational studies and evaluations, design systems and procedures, conduct work simplifications and measurement studies, and prepare operations and procedures manuals to assist management in operating more efficiently and effectively. Includes program analysts and management consultants.

Education:
Employers in the private industry usually seek people with a master's degree in business administration or a related discipline. Academic programs in business management, computer and information sciences, and engineering provide a suitable educational background for this occupation. In addition to the formal education, most entrants into this occupation have years of experience in management, human resources, information technology, or other specialties. They need to be self-motivated and disciplined. The ability to work in teams is important as consulting teams become more common.
Conditions:
Much of their time is spent divided between their office and the client's office. They usually work at least 40 hours a week. Uncompensated overtime is common, especially when deadlines are approaching. Self-employed consultants set their own workloads and work at home. Analysts sometimes experience stress when trying to meet clients' needs, often on a tight schedule.
Outlook:
Faster than average growth is projected for management analysts over the next decade. Job growth is expected in large consulting firms with international expertise and smaller consulting firms that specialize in specific areas, such as healthcare, information technology, human resources, and telecommunications. The growth of international business also has contributed to an increase in demand for management analysts.
